This month, our Founder and CEO Dr. Dan Doolittle shares some of the leadership lessons he has learned while serving in disaster relief medical missions around the world. Dr. Doolittle has provided medical care in Peru, Ukraine, Sudan, Carriacou, Myanmar, the Middle East, and, very recently, Saipan (in the Northern Mariana Islands). His work abroad reflects his work here at home: compassion for those experiencing life’s greatest trials.

The Emergency Department sits at the center of patient access, hospital operations, and financial performance. As a result, ED metrics often reveal system strengths and stress points earlier than any other area of the hospital, and are worth paying close attention to, something every hospital CEO knows instinctively.

I’ve seen a familiar kind of tension show up in more than one hospital setting, and it usually sounds something like this: “We’re busy. The team is working hard. Patients are getting cared for. But I can’t quite tell—are we healthy as a program?”

One of the greatest privileges of leadership is the opportunity to invest in our people, to help them reach their potential and find fulfillment, joy, and meaning in work. Integritas learned years ago the importance of helping our team members take control of their work and not allow their work to control them (which always leads to a sense of overwhelm at work).
